In January of 2023, after more than 20 years working in the manufacturing and mining industries, I made the decision to pursue a lifelong dream: opening a music shop. Music has been a passion of mine since I was a kid growing up in the mid-80s, and I’d always imagined creating a place where that passion could be shared with others. I also recognized the real need for a dedicated music store in Bathurst — somewhere that offered top-quality instruments, competitive pricing, and a friendly, welcoming environment for local musicians and the community at large.
That vision led to the creation of Ben’s Music Stop. At a time when independent music stores are becoming harder to find, I wanted to prove that passion still has a place on St George Street. From the beginning, my goal was simple: to build a shop where music truly lives and breathes — where every instrument is chosen for its exceptional quality and where everyone who walks through the door feels welcomed.
When I opened later in 2023, I focused on curating a selection of instruments chosen with intention and care. From the warm resonance of Gibson guitars to the craftsmanship of Taylor and the bold voice of PRS, I wanted every instrument in the store to meet the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship. I’ve always believed that the right instrument can inspire and transform a musician’s journey.
While online shopping and big-box retailers dominate much of the market today, I’m committed to preserving the experience that first made me fall in love with music: standing in a room full of instruments, picking one up, and feeling it in my hands. That moment — that spark — is something you simply can’t replicate through a screen.
At the same time, I recognize the importance of adapting to today’s retail landscape. That’s why Ben’s Music Stop also offers a full online store, giving customers across Canada access to our products with the same care, transparency, and competitive pricing you’d find in person. Having both options allows us to stay true to our roots while meeting the expectations of modern musicians.
Ben’s Music Stop is more than a retail space. It’s a place where beginners can get honest advice without pressure, where seasoned players can talk tone and setups, and where members of the local music community can gather and feel at home. My hope is that this store becomes a hub for creativity, conversation, and connection.
Independent music shops may not be as common as they once were, but they’re far from gone — and as long as musicians value craftsmanship, community, and the joy of real sound, I’ll be here, doing everything I can to help keep music alive in Bathurst.
